Class News

Coach Bell’s art classes participated in the 2008 Jr. Duck Stamp and South Carolina Reel Kids Fish Contest put on by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Earning honorable mention in the duck contest were: Emily Hallman, Diana Jaramillo, Jack Nichols, and Kristen Cordero.
In the Reel Kids Fish Contest, Tiffany Holcombe was a third place winner and Austin Bell won honorable mention. Congratulations and good job to all our art students.
News from Miss Stou
My students recently began reading the novel Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes. We learned a little about the Harlem Renaissance, read about Langston Hughes, and even listened to some jazz (thanks to teachers who donated their CDs). The students will be exploring their creative side with some poetry writing and sharing of their own. Who knows? Maybe someone will even come in and play some music for us! I look forward to some deep discussions about the topics mentioned in the novel.
After Spring Break, we will be taking on research. Students will be learning how to read nonfiction more carefully, how to paraphrase information, and how to cite research sources. The students will be working with the entire class on research and then will pair or group up to put together a final project to present their newfound knowledge. I hope the students will find this informative and interesting, not to mention slightly fun!
News from Mrs. Duggins
Mrs. Duggins’ students have started a new class novel, Touching Spirit Bear. The entire class is enjoying the story and the author’s writing style. We have been analyzing the text for all sorts of literary elements!
On the writing front, students are focusing on selecting one original piece of writing for revision and publication in our class book.

RODEO INFO!
Crouch's ESOL classes would like to thank our PTA and Mr. Dick Cory for the outstanding performance regarding the rodeo. We have enjoyed writing stories and drawing pictures about the rodeo. After the performance with Mr. Cory and Mr. Ronnie, the stock contractor for the rodeo, we were able to actually see what cowboys do and how they do it. Now everyone is very excited about going to the rodeo and seeing more cowboys with lariats & bull whips! Thank you, Mr. Cory!
After the exceptional visit by the cowboys, we enjoyed doing a project that allowed us to get a "feel" for life as a cowboy. Students did research to find out the history of the cowboy and the rodeo. They had to answer such questions as: Who gave the cowboys the new herding techniques in the early 15th century? Why was the rodeo invented? Tell about the cowboys’ special clothing: hat, chaps, boots . Who created the first cowboy hat, when was it made, and how did he make it?
You may want to do your own research project to find out the answers!
