Testing Updates
The Guidance Center is open from 7:30
a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Students are welcome to browse and to use
career and guidance materials. Some items may be checked out
overnight.
The counselors are available to help students with their academic and
personal concerns. Students may schedule an appointment with their
counselors before school, at lunch, or after school.
During the year small groups of students who have similar concerns may be
scheduled for a series of meeting. Students who wish to participate
in a small group will sign up in guidance and have a signed permission
form from their parents. These small groups may deal with topics
such as time management, managing stress, decision-making, controlling
anger, or coping with divorce, loss and grief. Small group topics
will be determined by student needs.
Large group(s) guidance sessions will be offered to students to provide
information about testing, college and career options, guidance services,
financial aid, graduation requirements and registration. Counselors
will visit classrooms several times a year with general information about
the above topics.
Counselors: Brenda Ouzts and Lauren Rainsford
Guidance Secretary: Pam Conyers
Testing Updates
- Students will have the opportunity to sign up for
the new PSAT. It will be given here at SHS on Wednesday,
October 13. The cost is $12.00 (to be paid at registration). No
refunds will be given for any reason. Any student planning on
attending a 4-year college should definitely take the PSAT both
as a tenth and eleventh grader. Only Junior year scores
are used in selecting semi-finalists for the National Merit Scholarship
awards and for identifying junior scholars. Students planning on
attending a 2-year or technical college generally do NOT need to take
the PSAT. For more information about the PSAT, visit their website at
www.collegeboard.com
.
- Two SAT workshops will be held at Saluda High School this year – one
in the fall and one in the spring. Students may attend one or both
sessions. There is a $25.00 workshop fee (per session) plus
$20.00 for the workbook (unless the student already has one from
attending a previous workshop). Students may not attend
without a workbook. No refunds will be given for any reason.
Students may sign up for the fall workshop during registration – they
will be given an opportunity to sign up for the spring session in
January or February.
- ATTENTION students who plan on attending a 4-year college!
The SAT/ACT college entrance tests have been revised. The new SAT
will be administered for the first time in March 2005 and the new ACT in
February 2005. Mrs. Ouzts will be meeting with juniors and seniors to
discuss these revisions in addition to other pertinent information.
- Please remember that students must make schedule change requests
during the drop/add period on August 2nd - 4th
from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM in the guidance office. A parent/guardian must
accompany each student.
- Our senior counselor will be meeting individually with
seniors/graduating juniors shortly after school begins to review final
graduation requirements in addition to discussing scholarship
procedures, the college process, useful websites, South Carolina
Scholarship/Grant programs, etc. Each senior will receive an informative
hand-out. Interested parents/guardians may also set up an
appointment to
meet with Mrs. Ouzts by calling her at (864) 445-3011.
