SALUDA FFA POULTRY TEAM TAKES TOP STATE HONORS

CLEMSON, SC…The Saluda High School FFA Poultry Evaluation Team took first place honors in the State Finals held at the State FFA Convention in Columbia recently, according to John W. Parris, state director of public affairs with the SC FFA organization.

Team members Kayla Rodgers, Joshua Nicholson, Lisa Stone, and Chrissie Coleman along with Amanda Nichols, Agricultural Education teacher and FFA advisor, were awarded expense-paid trips to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, to compete in the National Poultry Evaluation Finals later this year. Joshua Nicholson was the 3rd high individual scorer and Kayla Rodgers was the 2nd high individual scorer in the competition.

The Strom Thurmond FFA Chapter was named the Runner-up Team in the State Finals.  The team was coached by Dan Henderson, an Agricultural Education teacher and FFA advisor at the school.

A number of secondary school agricultural education departments include Poultry Science in their curriculum because of its importance to South Carolina’s overall economy,” Parris said. “ According to SC Agricultural Statistical Service Reports, broiler production is the number one agricultural commodity in the state accounting for 23 percent of the total farm income”, he added.

The mission of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

The Best of the Best......

Saluda Elementary and Hollywood Elementary
Invited to Participate in the Palmetto Gold and Silver
Awards Showcase

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLUMBIA - More than two hundred Palmetto Gold and Palmetto Silver

awards recipients have been invited to share their success stories with

other schools through the State Department of Education's 2006 Palmetto

Gold and Silver Awards Showcase.

The schools were awarded Palmetto Gold and Silver awards earlier this

year. Created by the Education Accountability Act, the Palmetto Gold

and Silver Awards Program recognizes and rewards schools for academic

success. As part of the awards program, the Department initiated the

Showcase project two years ago.

"I applaud all of these schools and their communities for the strides

that they have made in improving academic achievement," said State

Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum. "The showcase provides a

wonderful opportunity for educators to learn about the best practices in

their neighboring schools and to help create learning communities across

the state."

The invited Palmetto Gold and Palmetto Silver schools demonstrated the

highest levels of achievement and improvement among all gold and silver

winners. They have been encouraged to share success stores in such

areas as effective leadership; positive school climate; faculty

collaboration; exemplary curriculum, instruction and assessment

practices; and effective community and parental involvement programs.

The invited schools fall into four categories: 1) schools that have

performed at the top 10 percent of all schools in South Carolina and

have been an award recipient for three consecutive years; 2) schools

that have high poverty levels and received "Excellent" ratings on their

2004-05 school report cards; 3) schools that have high poverty, have

made steady improvement and have excellent results; and 4) schools that,

regardless of their poverty level, have made steady improvement with

excellent results.

Invited schools that decide to participate in the Showcase will submit

one-page summaries describing the topics they would like to share with

schools statewide. Those summaries, along with other school information

such as poverty levels, enrollment and demographic characteristics, will

be posted on the Showcase section of the Department of Education's

website.

For purposes of the selection process, high poverty level is defined as

having at least 60 percent of students on free/reduced price lunch.

Excellent results refer to schools that have improved their absolute

performance value and/or rating because of positive steady improvement

over the past three years.
